Welcome

Welcome to the John D. Perkins, Sr. Elementary School

Perkins School is located on Route 10, north of the Marlow Grocery Store. This small school provides a wonderful opportunity for students to join a caring and supportive learning community with a variety of programs. Our school benefits from the support of a very active Parent Teacher Association, our proactive school board and the citizens of this small, rural town. Our school educates students in kindergarten through grade six. Upon graduation from Perkins School, students in grades seven through twelve attend the Keene Middle and Keene High Schools. Our teachers teach two grades, arranged in grades 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6. This two-year arrangement allows students and teachers to develop a rapport to guide students’ educational journeys to reach their individual potentials. Our kindergarten program is a half-day program scheduled from 9:00 am to noon. We have a school lunch program for all students followed by a 20- minute recess. Students also have classes in Art, Music, French and Physical Education one day each week.

For questions about the school, please feel free to contact us.

Thank you for visiting our website.

Mrs. Phyllis Peterson
Principal

Reminders from the School Secretary

  • When your child is going to be absent or late, please call first thing in the morning. We are concerned about your child's welfare and want to be sure your child is safe. If they are absent without notice, the school secretary will attempt to call home, parents' work phone and other numbers on the student registration card to determine the whereabouts of your child.

  • After-school activities require a permission slip for children to participate. If it is an ongoing weekly activity, you can give a note to the school secretary stating permission for the school year. If students do not have a permission slip, they will not be allowed to stay. It is the parents' responsibility to arrange transportation home for your child. If they are riding home with someone other than yourself, we need a written note stating who will be transporting them.

  • Medicine Policy: It is not the policy of the school to dispense medicines such as cough/cold medicine or Tylenol/aspirin. Cough drops are to be given to the teacher, and they can be requested by the students "as needed."

  • Due to temporary security issues across the country, the exterior doors on the school will be locked once all the children have arrived at 9:00am, at which time attendance is taken. Classes start at 9:00am, and students are expected to be on time. Please try your best to have your child arrive on time. Tardiness is disruptive to the class schedule and students miss out on important instruction. The secretary will monitor the door during the day. In her absence, another staff member will be available.

  • If you are picking up your child after school, either wait outside at the main entrance, or if you would like to come inside, please remain in the foyer. School dismissal time is very hectic in classrooms and teachers are busy making sure students have all their homework, notes, lunch boxes etc. before the bus arrives. If you would like to confer with a teacher concerning your child, please wait until after the bus leaves. This will also provide you with some privacy as well.

  • Please do not expect to have your child supervised if they are dropped off at the school before the second bus arrives at 8:45am, unless they are here for a special activity with prior permission, such as a music lesson. If you choose to drop your child off earlier than 8:45am, they will remain outdoors, unsupervised.

  • Food Service: Lunches, snack drinks and lunch drinks need to be ordered and paid for one week in advance. Lunches are ordered ahead of time and delivered to us through the Keene Food Service. We do not receive extras. You may order and pay for your child's lunches a month at a time. Please note, all checks need to be made payable to "Keene Food Service."
