PTA Meeting Minutes - September 11, 2007 / John D. Perkins, Sr. Elementary School

The meeting was called to order at 3:15 pm with 6 members and 1 staff present.

Treasurer’s Report:

The treasurer’s report will be presented at the October meeting.

Election of Officers:

New officers for the 2007/2006 school year were elected. The officers are listed below:

President: Nancy Tomasko
Vice President: Sarah Henderson
Secretary: Stephanie Tickner
Treasurer: Treasurer: Beth LaFreniere

PTA Dues:

Dues are $3.50 this year. Members should pay this to Beth. We will also do a sign up for members at the October open house.

Open House:

The date has not yet been set for this, but it is usually in October. Traditionally we have had a sign up inviting people to join the PTA, even if they cannot attend meetings. Nancy suggested we make a poster for the open house. Susan offered to do this. Nancy will be in touch with her about what to include on the poster.

Fundraising:

Helping Hands

Our idea for fundraising from last spring was a “helping hands” theme, where we could use the die cut machine to make hand shaped cut-outs to mark donations from people. Nancy suggested posting notices around town for possible town support. The PTA needs about $1000 for the operating budget. Nancy projected we might get $500 from a helping hands fundraiser. Then we could hold another type of fundraiser in the spring to make up the difference, such as selling flower bulbs or calendars. If we do get enough from the helping hands fundraiser, we would not need to do another one. Nancy is concerned about the amount of work this fundraiser might require. She will look into using the die-cut machine. She will also do a notice to go home with students announcing an October 1 kickoff.

Campbell’s Soup Labels and General Mills Box Tops

We will be collecting these again this year. Nancy will send out a reminder notice. The collection box will be in the hallway. Beth will check with Bonnie at the store to see if we can put a box there as well.

Hannaford’s

This fundraiser is also taking place again this year. Last year $99 was earned for the school from people putting the special register receipts from buying certain items into the slot for Perkins School. Nancy suggested that if people bring the receipts to the school instead of putting them in the store collection area, they should be put in the PTA mailbox and she will bring them to the store. Nancy will send out an announcement about this fundraiser as well.

Upcoming Events:

Thanksgiving Dinner

Nancy said that we should start putting together the letters to stores asking for donations for this event. Last year we received quite a bit. We will also have to let the new food service staff person know about this event. The date will be Monday, November 12.

Christmas Craft Workshop

We need a chair to organize this event. We should also begin asking around if there are other parents or staff who would be interested in helping. Mrs. Peterson will ask the staff at their next meeting and get back to Nancy. The date will be Thursday, December 6 after school.

Maps with Historical Society and Conservation Commission:

Nancy mentioned that she was approached by Jen Brown of the Conservation Commission asking if the PTA would be interested in joining these other town groups in updating town trail maps that the Historical Society has. They would like people to walk the trails and make updates. Jen Brown will get us copies of the maps so we can look at them and decide how to proceed. Beth also suggested that this might be a good project for local Boy Scouts.

Playground Fund:

We have about $1200 in the fund. Beth and Nancy will get the current number for the next meeting. The swing set idea has not been forgotten, but since the grounds were not ready for a new swing set last year, it made no sense to purchase it. Hopefully this can happen this year.

Towels/Potholders for Kitchen:

Mrs. Scharf asked if the PTA would be interested in buying towels and potholders for the school kitchen. Mrs. Peterson will check to see if there is money for this in the regular school budget. Nancy suggested that if people have extras of these at home, donations could be made as well. No one was against the idea of the PTA buying new items if still needed.

T-Shirts:

We sold 80 t-shirts last spring. They were created and sold for school spirit rather than for a fundraiser. The PTA made less than $2 per shirt. Nancy wondered with cold weather coming if it would be a good idea to do school sweatshirts. She suggested that Sarah’s sister could draw another version of her polar bear reading a book or working at a computer (more scholarly than last spring’s sports theme). Discussion followed on sweatshirts vs. long sleeved shirts, and whether or not to include a date. It was decided that we should keep the date for nostalgia and that we should offer a choice of either sweatshirts or long sleeve t-shirts, or people could order both. Sarah will check into prices. Nancy suggested we should keep with the same color. Nancy and Sarah will work together to get this started.

Meeting Schedule:

PTA meetings will be the first Monday of the month at 3:00 pm unless otherwise indicated. The following schedule was confirmed through January:

  • October 1

  • November 5 (check in about the Thanksgiving dinner)

  • December 3 (make sure we are ready for the craft fair)

  • January 7

Spring dates will be set later.

Baby Shower:

Nancy asked if there will be a baby shower for Mrs. Giles. Mrs. Peterson said there is great interest in this but a date has not been set yet. The PTA cannot buy gifts for teachers with PTA funds, but PTA members can donate items for a gift basket. Mrs. Peterson will let Nancy know of the date.

Walk New Hampshire:

Beth asked if we should participate in the Walk NH program again this year. She said that participation was way down last year. Beth said she would still log the student miles. She said she would ask the 3/4 class if they would be interested in drawing a NH map since they are currently doing map studies. It was agreed that this is a good program and we should participate. Beth will send home the mileage forms next week.
