PTA Meeting Minutes - March 17, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 3:10 pm with 6 members and 2 staff present.

Treasurer’s Report:

The treasurer’s report was presented and reviewed. The money from the Hannaford’s fundraiser should arrive in a couple of weeks. It will be over $800.

Teacher Appreciation Day:

Teach Appreciation day is May 6. Last year the PTA did a buffet lunch that worked well. The teachers liked it. We will plan to do that again this year.

Garden and Library Dedication:

The tentative date for this is Saturday, May 3. The observation tower garden will be dedicated to Sandy Cunningham and the library will be dedicated to Peg Wyman. The goal is to have it near Earth Day to connect with the garden. One activity might be to have a letterbox hike from the garden. We are hoping to have an artist to connect with the library piece.

Playground Fund:

Nancy brought in a catalog and shared equipment ideas we might consider buying for the playground including a stand-up spinner, funnel ball structure, hoop-style monkey bars and swings. We have heard in the past that the students would like more swings. Conversation followed on whether it would be better to just get the swings, or have the kids vote on what they want. It was decided to let the students vote. After running the idea by Mrs. Peterson, Nancy will get photos of the four items listed above to use in a student election. She will also get the costs to teachers by Friday.

There was also further discussion on repairing the current climbing structure. Nancy thinks that should be a budgeted school board item. Doing those repairs would be too costly for the PTA.

Enrichment Program:

We currently have $796.63. Nancy said she received a request from the teachers for an all-school Harris Center program for June 18. The cost is $280. That would leave $516 in the account, so Nancy will send out another letter to the teachers letting them know how much money is left and that they can still choose to do something else.

6th Grade Graduation Gift:

In the past atlases have been purchased by the PTA, but these may not be particularly useful to students. Discussion followed that if PTA no longer gives atlases, what would we want to do instead? What would be useful? Should we continue the tradition or stop giving gifts to the graduates? Foreign language dictionaries were suggested, but even though they would be used, they would not be very thrilling. It is not clear what language students might take either. The atlases cost about $12-$15. It was decided that the PTA would give the graduates a $10 gift card to Toadstool. There are currently 3 sixth graders.

All-School Field Trip:

Plans are underway to set up an all-school field trip to Worcester. The staff are considering the Higgins Armory Museum and the Eco Terrarium. They will let the PTA know which trip they choose. The PTA is in favor of supporting this trip. The Hannaford’s money could be used towards this.
