PTA Meeting Minutes – February 10, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 3:10 pm with 7 members present.

Treasurer’s Report

There were no changes since the last meeting.

Classroom Enrichment

Ideas for ways to use the classroom enrichment money were brought to the meeting as was suggested last month.

Moving Company - One idea was attending the Moving Company performance of the Lorax at Keene Middle School on March 31. The cost is $1 per person. Considering transportation, it would be a good idea to budget $100.

Harris Center - The Harris Center activities are filling up for the spring. The 3rd/4th classroom is interested in looking into this. 3rd/4th is also interested in garden projects and asked if the PTA would be able to fund supplies. It was agreed that the PTA be able to fund some supplies. We can also show Miss Antel the current gardens by the observation tower.

Tom Wessels - One idea that was suggested for the 5th/6th classroom was to check into the cost and availability of Antioch faculty Tom Wessels, author of Reading the Forested Landscape. It would be great to have him come to the school in conjunction with the hike up Bald Mountain. Marcia will check on the costs and will talk to Mr. Brewer to see if he is interested. If Tom can come to Marlow, his visit could perhaps be turned into a town event also connected to the conservation commission and the historical society

Marlow Conservation Commission - The Marlow Conservation Commission has expressed interest in connecting with Marlow students through hikes or other activities. The chair, John Asseng is a forester and works in the army corps of engineers. Each year he does an amphibian count that could be very educational and fun for students. Perhaps there could be an after school training, followed by the evening count. Discussion followed that Marlow is in such a great location, and we should really promote conservation and ecology. Even if activities are not brought into the school day, a once a month after school science club could be a great idea. There could be projects, hikes, tracking, etc. Everyone was very supportive of these ideas and also of bringing various Marlow groups together.

School Sign

Beth took a picture of the new sign with a thank you note for the church since the church contributed towards the cost. Everyone liked the picture. Nancy will transfer the image onto a card for the PTA to send.

Fall Fundraiser

Nancy submitted the paperwork to the Genevieve Company before the January 31, 2006 deadline so we are eligible for 50% of the profits. The dates for next fall will be to hold the fundraiser from September 15 through October 2, with a November 6 delivery.

Meeting Times

Nancy suggested that the PTA hold some of its meetings in the evening to hopefully bring in more people. As a way to accommodated various schedules it was decided to do some day and some evening meetings.
