PTA Meeting Minutes - January 20, 2006The meeting was called to order at 3:15 pm with 6 members and one staff present. Fall Fundraiser: The paperwork has already come in to sign up for next year with the Genevieve Company. The deadline to apply is January 31, 2006 in order to be eligible for 50% of the profits. All agreed to submit the paperwork by this deadline. Nancy will get this done. Classroom Enrichment: One application was received from the kindergarten and 1st/2nd classrooms to bring in a program called “The Shepherd’s Life” from Westmoreland. Mrs. Wyman explained that the program includes sheep sheering and wool crafts. It ties in well with the social studies curriculum. All members approved the application. This leaves $650 in classroom enrichment funds. Discussion followed on how best to use this money. Ideas included Harris Center programs, the Movement Company, or even an after school program. PTA members should look for interesting brochures to bring to the next meeting to share with teachers. This might generate some new ideas. Treasurer’s Report: There is currently $1580 in the main account. The new sign has been paid for. There is $854.37 in the playground fund. The Cans for Kids fundraiser is taking place at the transfer station. It was suggested that perhaps the PTA might match the funds they raise for the schoolyard topsoil. School Sign: Currently there are no restrictions on how to use the sign. Discussion followed on the best way to use it. School functions should get priority. Friendly messages could be put up when there are no upcoming events. There was a question of whether or not there should be a time limit for messages, as in not putting a message up more than a week in advance of the event. No decision was made at this time. It was also suggested that we offer a volunteer to Mrs. Scharf if she would prefer not to change the sign letters. Room Partitions: Mr. Brewer had hoped to get room partitions with a grant, but this did not work out. It was asked if we want to continue thinking about purchasing these very expensive items. No decision was made at this time. Thank You Note for the Church: Since the church contributed towards the cost of the new sign, it was suggested that we take a picture of the sign with a thank you note on it and send this to the church. All agreed this is a good idea. Beth will take care of this. Cheshire Smiles Newsletter: Marcia mentioned that Perkins School was mentioned twice in the Cheshire Smiles newsletter. The PTA pays for the Cheshire Smiles program at Perkins School. Reviving the PTA: The PTA did not have a lot of energy coming into this school year. Now seems like a good time to try to get more activities going again. Discussion followed on things we could do including:
Read-a-Thon Idea: This idea generated a lot of enthusiastic discussion. The theme evolved into “Cozy up with a good book”, with an end goal of creating a book quilt rather than offering prizes for reading. Students could make posters of their favorite books that could then be transferred onto fabric squares for making a quilt to hang in the cafeteria. It was suggested that we have a “kick off” night right before April vacation. Adults could read different books in each classroom, and students could choose which book to hear. The movie “Pagemaster” could also be shown, which is about a boy who interacts with characters in various books. More details will be worked out at the next meeting. Next Meeting: Friday, February 10, 2006 3:00 pm Meeting was adjourned at 4:00 pm. |
