Kindergarten
& Grade 1
Our classroom is an engaging
one with ample space for students to explore, make choices, and
communicate with peers. We have opportunities to visit with French,
music, physical education and art teachers on a weekly basis. Our small
class is a nurturing one with much individual attention.
Students enter kindergarten with a wide range of abilities and
experiences upon on which to build. We work daily with phonemic
awareness activities through chants, poetry, and choral reading.
Students progress towards reading by working daily with letter and sound
recognition (in isolation and in words), sight words, and a variety of
games. We are surrounded by literature, and many students will be
reading independently by the end of the year.
Our daily math work begins with the calendar each day as we explore the
concepts of time. Students recognize, represent, and count numbers to at
least 30. Each child will have a solid understanding of numbers as they
learn key math phrases such as “more than”, “less than”, and “after”.
Early addition and subtraction concepts are introduced. Money, patterns
and geometry are important math skills at this age level, as well.
