Grades 5 & 6

Our reading program is made up of three elements. The first is a basal reader approach that supplies the necessary structure to teach the mechanics of the language arts. Secondly, we use a variety of trade books that provide students with high interest literature at the appropriate levels. The third element of our reading is our social studies curriculum that necessitates students to research through a variety of reference materials. The curriculum for science and social studies alternates over the two years to meet the needs of incoming fifth graders and the sixth grade students.

Our language arts program develops challenges for student growth by the use of writing prompts, similar to the NECAP, our state assessment, for both long and short term writing assignments that address grammar and proper organizational formats for a variety of writing assignments.

The mathematics program uses a textbook and is supported by the use of computers to help teach the basics concepts of geometry, Cartesian coordinates, sequential thinking and structural design. Computer projects in all the curriculum areas promote a sense of teamwork and research skills.
