Grades 3 & 4
Welcome to Third and Forth Grade! Students in
grades three and four start each day with a Responsive Classroom modeled
Morning Meeting. From there we move into our new Houghton Mifflin
math program. Following the scope and sequence of the curriculum,
we integrate hands-on experiences into our work. Third and Forth
Graders receive differentiated instruction in Math. After Math we
have snack and read-aloud time. From there students attend their
daily special (Music, Media, French, P.E. or Art).
Next, our Language Arts curriculum includes Daily Paragraph Editing
practice, reinforcing correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization and
language skills. We have a trade book reading program that is
supported by both the Classroom Teacher and Reading Specialist. We
also integrate Houghton Mifflin Reading, a literature-based reading
program, into our language arts curriculum. Students practice
their writing skills through informal Personal Journal time and
integrating thematic projects. We also have a new Houghton Mifflin
spelling program which is reinforced in our weekly homework practice.
In the afternoon, we explore our Social Studies and Science themes.
These programs are integrated into other subjects. All
curriculums focus on our New Hampshire cultural and physical environment
and history. Regional field trips help bring experiential learning
into our place-based Social Studies and Science program. This year
our themes of study include maps and map making, New Hampshire pre-1900,
water, and animals. Weekly Science Journal excursions in and
around the school yard reinforce our place-based curriculum
