Grades 3 & 4

Welcome to Third and Fourth Grade!  Students in grades three and four start each day with a Responsive Classroom modeled Morning Meeting.  From there we move into our Houghton Mifflin Spelling program as well as our Handwriting Without Tears cursive handwriting program. After that, we enjoy a quick snack and move right into our Language Arts curriculum, which includes Daily Oral Language, reinforcing correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization and language skills. We also work on our literature-based Houghton Mifflin Reading program. Third and Fourth graders receive differentiated instruction in reading. We also intersperse whole-class trade books as an opportunity to collaborate and work on in-depth projects. Students practice their writing skills through informal Personal Journal time and integrating thematic projects. From there, students attend their daily special in P.E. Music, French, Media, or Art.

In the afternoon, we move into our Houghton Mifflin Math program. Following the scope and sequence of the curriculum, we integrate hands-on experiences into our work.  Third and Fourth Graders receive differentiated instruction in Math. Next, we explore our Science and Social Studies themes. All curriculums focus on our New Hampshire cultural and physical environment and history. We work in collaborative groups to answer questions and work on hands-on activities. Third and Fourth graders are also able to take advantage of the wonderful school grounds as a means to observe, question, and discover the natural world.
