West Yard and Village Cemeteries:

Mary noted that Vermont Hillside had mowed the West Yard Cemetery and the Village Cemetery on Tuesday, June 26. Due to the weather the grass had grown very fast at the West Yard Cemetery, which was due to be mowed only 3 times a year, starting generally before Memorial Day . The second mowing in 2005 was July 1 and July 18th in 2006. Depending on the weather we may be looking at 4 times. Mary noted a mowing schedule is fine, but it needs to be flexible. The next mowing of the Village Cemetery is scheduled in two weeks. She noted that the mowing schedule would be reviewed for the remainder of the year and that she had received an apology from Vermont Hillside.

Complaint and Praise…..:

Mary noted that just before the 2nd mowing of the Village cemetery, Laura Sullivan, visited the grave of her grandparents, Jim and Ann Whippie. This was unfortunate timing as she mailed a letter on the 11th of June to the Selectmen telling them that she had “never seen the Village Cemetery so uncared for”. Mary noted that she believes a letter should be sent to Ms. Sullivan to reassure her that we do truly care. A copy of our letter should go to the Selectmen.

Mary added that the same day she received the Sullivan’s letter, Charlie Strickland called to say that he had someone tell him that the cemetery looked great.

Sale of Plots - Village Cemetery:

Sally and Leroy Mosher have purchased lot 353 and Leaugeay and Scott Taylor have purchased 351A. 351B (a double) is available at this time, as well as Cremation plots:

  • 305 B

  • 306 A

  • 307 B

  • 309 A

Mary noted that research still needs to be done on lot 314 - James White

The Deed has been signed for Venne and will be mailed this week along with a copy of our rules and regulations and a promise of an addendum which should be written soon.

Tony Davis and Mary Avery will sign the deeds for Mosher and Taylor this week.

String Trimmer Invoice:

An invoice was given to the Selectmen on May 21st. The invoice amount was $242.00 to be charged to the Highway Dept. This invoice was returned last week to the Trustees with “no thanks” written on it. Currently the string trimmer is in the possession of Paul Lawrence from Vermont Hillsides. He used it on the Village Cemetery and indicated that both his brother and father are interested in purchasing the trimmer. I talked to Ashuelot Valley Equipment and they've indicated that the retail for this string trimmer last year was $319 and the used price for that model this year is $195.

Marcotte vs Briggs:

On the 27th Joe Marcotte stopped me on the way to his work to let me know that the Briggs gravestones ( and the Bradshaw baby’s stone as well) have been placed at the foot of the plot rather than the head and that no stones should be back to back (“head to head”). Mary noted that she was not certain what he intended for the Trustees to do, but the situation does merit investigation and we should have a policy that designates direction of foot placement and of the head stone.

Toppled stones - Village Cemetery:

Mary noted that the Trustees should be hearing from D&M Monument soon as they came out on a June to look at the toppled stones. They will be giving us an estimate and a map designating the stones that need work.

D&H Monument is willing to do the work and be paid after the Trustees receive the McCourt trust. This also demands that we cross reference the stones that need work with those which do have perpetual care as well as contact living relatives of stones needing work.

Cemetery Trustees Seminar:

Mary noted that she had Gerry had attended the Cemetery Trustees Seminar on the 19th of June and have copious notes and info. She noted that once they go over their written material, they will share the material with the remainder of the Cemetery Trustees.
