Marlow Historical Society Minutes & Reports

April

Executive Meeting Marlow Historical Society April 04, 2006 /Unapproved Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 6:40 PM. Mary Blank, John Salo, and Loisanne Foster were present. Loisanne read the Secretary's report which was approved as amended. Mary Blank read the Treasurer's Report which was approved as read.

Old Business:

The Marlow Fire documentary, now called "Four Days of Fury" will be given its premiere showing at the Annual meeting of the HSCC. Mary will plan her new display of photos at the Town Offices around the Marlow 1941 Marlow Fire to draw attention to the Marlow Premier tentatively scheduled for June.

The Skull and Antler Show:
Organized and presented by Jim Strickland in memory of Marge Davis and this year in honor of Aaron Dimlich, will feature an Alaskan hunting film by George Klucky at Jones Hall as well as a display of large and unusual trophies at the Grange. This will be held Saturday, April 8 from 10-4

We have twenty new copies of the Marlow Histories, this time at a cheaper rate which allows us a slightly larger margin of profit. They are well-done, so we will continue with this company, Silver Direct in Marlborough.

We decided that, since the cost of extra insurance for a display at the Antique Co-op in Milford is prohibitive, and the cost of insuring our entire collection is even more prohibitive, if we do a display at Milford, it will be mainly facimile pictures. Loisanne will contact the Co-op to determine if this is acceptable.

The remainder of the Guy Lounder balance owed to Al Blank, as he paid it in advance for us, is now entirely paid off.

Edward (Bucky) White's estimate for painting the Grange is $2,900.00, less than the Menino estimate of $5,500.00, but the two estimates are not necessarily based on the same work. Mary will list the work on which Mr. Menino based his estimate and get an equivalent estimate from Mr. White. Mary will also ask Guy Lounder for an estimate.

Mary had contacted the 3rd-4th grade teacher at Perkins School and sent our offer of covering the cost a history workshop for teachers, but received no response.

Mary will meet this month with the Youth Group we sponsor to explain what we do and try to involve them. We intend to invite a Youth representative to each of our Executive Board Meetings.

NEW BUSINESS:

We received a gift book, Styles Bridges, Yankee Senator by James J. Kiepper from the State Executive Chamber. They sponsored a grant to sent each New Hampshire historical society a copy.

Loisanne presented a gift from Dan Deering, a copy of the 1873 Catalogue of Marlow Academy. It shows not only a list of students, but where each boarded, as well as the program, tuition expenses, and much else. She also presented a gift from Bill and Loisann Huntley of Lyme, CT: the program of the Second Annual National Huntley Family Reunion which was held at Jones Hall in Marlow in 1948. It includes a synopsis of the history of the Marlow Huntleys. She explained that we now have the Giffin family genealogy and "The History of the Giffin Family" by Maria Giffin. Keene, NH. 1886 as well as other Giffin artifacts, thanks to the generosity of Mardy O'Neil of Maryland, Giffin descendant.

The date of the Monadnock Music Concert and Dinner is changed again: July 28, 2006.

Candy Wiggum would like to see us plant new elm trees in town to celebrate our 30th anniversary as a historical society. We will look into this.

The Hearse House needs sweeping, brushing, dusting, and a paint job. We will seek volunteers.

Loisanne noted that Jen Brown suggested that we join with the local Conservation Association to sponsor a talk and hike lead by Steve Taylor, Commissioner of Agriculture, who is an expert on stone walls. We agreed whole-heartedly that this is a great idea. Loisanne will contact Jen Brown about this.

Our April public program will be the film on the Chicago Fair combined with a display from Old Home Days.

Our May public program will be called "Tales Out of School." Loisanne will lead off with Abbie Giffin Kilgore Owen's letter to the Marlow Academy alumni written in 1901 in which she describes the first days of Marlow Academy, its teachers and leaders. Others will be invited to tell stories of their Marlow school experiences. ("I walked three miles to school uphill both ways", and "What happened after Eddie --- dipped Molly ---'s pigtail in the inkwell," etc. right up to Perkins School days.

Respectfully submitted,
Loisanne Foster
